EXPECT FUEL SAVINGS BY USING GREEN CAR AIRCON

Conventional automotive aircon systems place a load on your car engine.  This results in higher fuel consumption figures when driving with your aircon ON.

A new study commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) shows that in hot parts of the world, automobile cooling systems account for up to 30% of fuel consumption. (Refer to Turning Off the Air Conditioning Helps Save Fuel). Published in Science Daily, Empa (2010, June 28).

A consumer reports article highlighted that prior to 2008, MPG (Miles Per Gallon) figures on cars stickers sold in the US were based on city and highway mileage testing methodologies designed over 40 years ago.  The old system does not accurately reflect today's driving conditions, motoring habits or vehicles.  The new system features additional tests including those where the vehicles are run at higher speeds while using the air conditioner.

Comparing the variation of the old and new data, you can discover how your vehicle's fuel consumption test results fare.  An approximation of fuel economy gains after installation of the Green Car aircon is to reference the old data, where fuel economy tests are done with the air conditioner OFF.

The official US government source for information on Fuel Economy information can be found at www.fueleconomy.org and is published by the US Department of Energy and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
